In short: A Scottsdale car accident claim is an Arizona personal-injury case. ADOT’s 2024 city table recorded 4,219 crashes in Scottsdale and 15 people killed. Arizona generally allows two years to sue for injury (A.R.S. § 12-542), reduces damages by each side’s share of fault without a 50% bar (A.R.S. § 12-2505), and sends civil injury suits of $10,000 or more to Maricopa County Superior Court in downtown Phoenix — not to a Scottsdale courthouse. Lawrence Ruiz reviews these claims from Tempe.

Scottsdale Crash Numbers (ADOT 2024)

Lead with the city of occurrence, not a Valley-wide average. ADOT’s 2024 Motor Vehicle Crash Facts jurisdiction table lists Scottsdale as:

  • 4,219 total crashes
  • 15 fatal crashes
  • 1,421 injury crashes
  • 2,783 property-damage-only (PDO) crashes
  • 15 people killed
  • 2,113 people injured
  • 226 alcohol-related crashes (6 killed, 128 injured)

Those figures are all-mode city totals. The jurisdiction table does not split passenger cars from trucks, motorcycles, or pedestrians, so 4,219 is not a car-only count. The 226 alcohol-related crashes are a subset of that same Scottsdale row, not a separate lawsuit category.

For context from the same report: Maricopa County recorded 88,094 crashes, 560 fatal crashes, 594 people killed, and 37,649 injured. Statewide, ADOT reported 121,107 crashes, 1,117 fatal crashes, 1,228 people killed, and 54,426 injured. Sources: ADOT Crash Facts and the 2024 Crash Facts PDF.

Camelback, Hayden, and the Loop 101 Approaches

A Scottsdale claim often turns on where the collision happened — surface street or freeway approach — because camera coverage, speed, and the police agency can differ.

The City of Scottsdale has pointed to MAG’s Top 100 High Injury Intersections list. Two Scottsdale locations on that list are Camelback Road & Goldwater Boulevard (rank 70) and Hayden Road & Thomas Road (rank 75). That ranking is the city’s cited MAG list, not a Ruiz study. See the City of Scottsdale news item.

Scottsdale also runs a Safe Streets Scottsdale engagement process. That is a city safety program, not a crash-count table.

Freeway approaches that serve Scottsdale include Loop 101, Loop 202, and SR 51. Local press has mentioned Loop 101 at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Loop 101 at Scottsdale Road; those are not official ADOT city-table figures. Scottsdale’s Transportation Commission has discussed left-in/left-out and median work on Shea Boulevard as a city process, not as a published crash total.

Arizona Deadlines and Fault (Not Nevada Law)

A Scottsdale crash is governed by Arizona statutes. Nevada’s rules apply only if the crash was in Nevada.

Two-year injury clock. A.R.S. § 12-542 states:

Except as provided in section 12-551 there shall be commenced and prosecuted within two years after the cause of action accrues, and not afterward, the following actions:

  1. For injuries done to the person of another including causes of action for medical malpractice as defined in section 12-561.
  2. For injuries done to the person of another when death ensues from such injuries, which action shall be considered as accruing at the death of the party injured.

Missing that window can end the lawsuit even if fault looks clear. Evidence — intersection video, vehicle data, and witness detail — often disappears much sooner than two years.

Pure comparative fault. A.R.S. § 12-2505 states:

A. The defense of contributory negligence or of assumption of risk is in all cases a question of fact and shall at all times be left to the jury. If the jury applies either defense, the claimant's action is not barred, but the full damages shall be reduced in proportion to the relative degree of the claimant's fault which is a proximate cause of the injury or death, if any. There is no right to comparative negligence in favor of any claimant who has intentionally, wilfully or wantonly caused or contributed to the injury or wrongful death.

Arizona does not use Nevada’s 51% bar. Damages are reduced by the claimant’s share of fault. The statute does not create a recovery if the claimant intentionally, wilfully, or wantonly caused the harm.

Public-entity claims are shorter. If a city, county, state, or public employee may be involved (a government vehicle, or a claim that a public roadway design caused the crash), Arizona requires a notice of claim within 180 days. A.R.S. § 12-821.01 states:

A. Persons who have claims against a public entity, public school or a public employee shall file claims with the person or persons authorized to accept service for the public entity, public school or public employee as set forth in the Arizona rules of civil procedure within one hundred eighty days after the cause of action accrues. The claim shall contain facts sufficient to permit the public entity, public school or public employee to understand the basis on which liability is claimed. The claim shall also contain a specific amount for which the claim can be settled and the facts supporting that amount. Any claim that is not filed within one hundred eighty days after the cause of action accrues is barred and no action may be maintained thereon.

The lawsuit against a public entity or public employee then has a one-year limit. A.R.S. § 12-821:

All actions against any public entity or public employee shall be brought within one year after the cause of action accrues and not afterward.

Those public-entity rules are a caution when a government actor may be in the fact pattern. This page does not diagnose a reader’s crash as a government claim.

After a Scottsdale Crash: Care and Records

Get medical care. Photograph the vehicles, lane markings, signals, and any visible injury. Exchange insurance information. Ask for the report number. Avoid a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer until you have spoken with a lawyer. Call (725) 485-3301 or use the callback form. CTAs are phone or callback only.

Maricopa County Superior Court — Downtown Phoenix

A Scottsdale injury case is still a Maricopa County case. Civil actions of $10,000 or more (excluding interest, costs, and attorney fees) go to Superior Court, not Justice Court. See the court’s civil lawsuit guide.

Hearings are at the downtown Phoenix campus even when papers are dropped at another counter. Packet CVC1 is the court’s instruction on that point. The clerk’s Central Court Complex is 201 W Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85003 (facility listing). Personal-injury cover-sheet type 101 (non-death / personal injury) is the motor-vehicle injury box on that packet. There is no Scottsdale Superior Court campus for these civil trials.

Arizona office (the only Arizona NAP on this page): The Ruiz Law Firm, 222 S Mill Ave Ste 800, Tempe, AZ 85281. Serving Scottsdale from Tempe. Tempe Google Business Profile verification is pending; this page does not claim a Maps pack ranking or a Scottsdale listing.

The firm also represents people hurt in Nevada car crashes. If the collision was in Las Vegas, use the Las Vegas car accident lawyer page. Nevada uses modified comparative negligence with a 51% bar (NRS 41.141). Arizona’s A.R.S. § 12-2505 is pure comparative fault. A Scottsdale crash is Arizona law. Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to file a car accident lawsuit in Arizona?

Arizona generally requires a personal-injury action to be commenced within two years after the claim accrues (A.R.S. § 12-542). If death ensues from the injuries, subsection 2 treats the action as accruing at death. Public-entity claims have shorter notice and suit deadlines (A.R.S. § 12-821.01 and § 12-821).

What if I was partly at fault for a Scottsdale crash?

Arizona uses pure comparative negligence (A.R.S. § 12-2505). Contributory negligence and assumption of risk are jury questions. The claim is not barred because you share fault; damages are reduced by your percentage. The statute withholds comparative-negligence rights if you intentionally, wilfully, or wantonly caused or contributed to the injury.

Do you have a Scottsdale office?

No. The firm serves Scottsdale from the Tempe office at 222 S Mill Ave Ste 800, Tempe, AZ 85281. This page does not claim a Scottsdale street address or a Scottsdale Google listing.

Where is a Scottsdale injury lawsuit heard?

Maricopa County Superior Court. Civil injury cases of $10,000 or more are heard downtown at 201 W Jefferson St, Phoenix, even if filing papers are dropped at another counter (lawsuit guide; CVC1).

Is HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea a Level I trauma center?

Not on the AZDHS designated trauma-center list used for this page. HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center is listed as Level I. Shea has an emergency department. The firm is not affiliated with either hospital.

Does ADOT publish a Scottsdale car-versus-truck crash split?

No. The 2024 jurisdiction table for Scottsdale is an all-mode city total (4,219 crashes, 15 killed). It does not break out passenger cars, trucks, or motorcycles.

Do I pay an attorney fee up front?

No attorney fee unless we recover money for you. Call (725) 485-3301 or request a callback. Clients may be responsible for costs as explained in writing before you retain the firm.
